How to choose your foundation

Hi Beauty Reader,

The right shade and texture of foundation are the most important factors in the process of makeup application. Since the face is a kind of canvas, everyone will notice a wrong foundation on your skin, that looks like a mask or that is too bright or cakey.

Before you choose the color of your foundation, you need to know what type of skin you have. Is it normal, oily, dry, combination, sensitive? Then you choose the undertone of your skin color that suit for you.

There are 3 undertone of your colors; warm, neutral, or cool. If you are not sure about your undertone, a classic advice is to look at the color of your vein,

  • Color Green, you have warm undertones.
  • Color Blue, you have cool undertones.
  • If your veins are something between blue and green, you are a neutral.

Cool shades of foundation have more red mixed in, while the warm shades are yellow based, without any reds. However, there are many shades and their names are not cool or warm, but they have their own names like Ivory, Beige, Sand,Honey. Sometimes it helps to know one color that quite familiar in the net-izen such as MAC or Chanel shade.

If you already know one color then you can match with other brand shades. Ex: If I want to purchase another brand, I like to google with keyword “Laura Mercier foundation for Beige 30” or “ Rimmel foundation for NC 30” there are many beauty junkies that share their foundation shade in the internet.

The texture of the foundation is another important factor to consider. Why choose a foundation just because is the last hit in advertising? It’s more important that suit with the type of skin you have. If you have very dry skin, try with cream foundationthat will provide you a healthy, dewy look. If you have oily skin, look after for oil free formula that will help to reduce the oiliness in your skin.

A few tips when choosing your foundation:
- The foundation has to melt with your skin, it will be providing a healthy appearance
- When choosing the color of your foundation, check it under natural light without any dark shades around (not in the light of the store). If you’re at a store, you may take a walk outside of the store and check it whether it’s too bright or too dark
- The color of your foundation has to match your skin tone in the area, starting from the neck through jawline and whole face
- Do NOT try the color of foundation on your hand. The hands are always different in color compared to the face

With all this tips, I hope you will choose your perfect foundation!
